What "rate my face" actually measures

When you ask an AI to rate your face, you are really asking how closely one photograph matches patterns the model learned from professional portrait and modeling photography. Our rating maps 50+ facial landmarks — eye corners, nose bridge, lip line, jaw contour — and converts them into 14 feature scores covering facial symmetry, jawline definition, bone structure, eye area, skin clarity, facial proportions, and photogenicity. The blended result is your overall score, and your percentile tells you where that score lands among the 2.4 million+ faces analyzed here so far.

That framing matters. A face rating is a statement about a photo, not a person: lighting, camera distance, lens focal length, and head angle all move the number. The same face shot at arm's length on a wide phone lens can score several points lower than the identical face photographed from 1.5 metres, because close-range lenses distort the nose and narrow the jaw — a documented effect called perspective distortion.

How the AI rates a face, step by step

First, face detection finds and normalizes your face. Second, landmark mapping plots 50+ points and computes geometry: left–right symmetry deviation, vertical facial thirds, interocular distance relative to face width, jaw-to-cheekbone ratio, and proportion ratios in the golden-ratio family. Third, learned visual features score texture-dependent categories like skin clarity and eye-area contrast. Separate models score male and female faces, because photographic conventions differ between them. The full pipeline — including its limitations and known biases — is documented on our methodology page.

A useful rule of thumb for reading your result: scores above the 80th percentile mean your photo matches modeling-photography conventions strongly; mid-range scores are where most people land by definition; and a low score most often means the photo, not the face, diverged from the convention — retake it in daylight, from a distance, facing the camera, and it will usually move.

Getting an accurate rating

Use a sharp, front-facing photo in soft, even daylight with your full face unobstructed — no sunglasses, no heavy filters, hair off the face. Neutral expression or a slight smile both work. Avoid harsh overhead light (it shadows the eye area and lowers eye-impact scores) and avoid selfie-distance shots for the lens-distortion reason above. Three or four scans of different photos will show you your realistic range, which is more informative than any single number.

Frequently asked questions

Is this face rating free?+

Yes — upload a photo and you get the full 14-feature rating, overall score, and percentile free, with no signup. An account is only needed if you want your scan history saved.

What is a good face rating score?+

Scores are percentile-based against 2.4M+ analyzed faces, so by construction most people land mid-range. Above the 80th percentile indicates strong conformance to modeling-photography conventions; below that, photo quality is usually the biggest lever.

Why do I get different scores from different photos?+

Lighting, camera distance, lens distortion, and head angle all change the measured geometry. Scan a few different photos to see your realistic range — the spread is normal and expected.

Is an AI face rating accurate?+

It is consistent — the same photo always scores the same — but it measures conformance to photographic conventions, not beauty or how attractive people find you in real life. Treat it as insight and entertainment, not a verdict.

Does anyone else see my photo or rating?+

No. Results are private to you, shareable cards show only your scores (never your photo), and you can delete your scans anytime.
