Jawline type is mostly determined by one measurement: the gonial angle, the corner of the jaw below your ear. A sharper angle produces the square, defined look; a more obtuse one produces a softer, rounder contour. Everything else — width, chin shape, how much definition shows in a photo — layers on top of that. Here is how to identify yours, and an honest account of what does and doesn't change it.
The measurement underneath all of it
Run a finger from the point of your chin back along your jaw until you hit the corner beneath your earlobe. That corner is the gonial angle, where the vertical branch of the jawbone meets the horizontal one.
Roughly speaking: angles near 115–125° read as sharp and angular on camera. Angles above about 130° read as soft or rounded. This single number does more work than any other in determining what people call a "good" jawline, and it is set by bone.
The second variable is bigonial width — the distance between the two jaw corners — measured relative to your cheekbone width. Wide relative to cheekbones reads as square. Narrower reads as tapered.
The main jawline types (jaw shapes)
The terms get used interchangeably online — jawline types, jaw types, jaw shapes and jawline shapes all describe the same thing. Six recur consistently:
Square. Sharp gonial angle, wide bigonial distance, and a chin that is broad and relatively flat rather than pointed. The jaw is close to as wide as the cheekbones, giving the lower face a rectangular outline. This is the archetypal "strong jaw" and the most-selected male-model configuration.
Defined / angular. A sharp gonial angle without the extreme width — the contour separates cleanly from the neck and casts a visible shadow line, but the face still tapers toward the chin. Common in editorial casting for both men and women because it photographs with structure without reading as heavy.
V-shape (tapered). Narrow bigonial width with a pointed chin, producing a face that narrows sharply from cheekbones to chin. Strongly favoured in East Asian beauty conventions and in a lot of Western female casting. The gonial angle can be sharp or soft; it's the taper that defines the type.
Oval / soft. A more obtuse gonial angle with a gently curved contour and no hard corner. Reads as approachable and youthful rather than structured. Extremely common, and worth saying plainly: this is a normal jaw, not an absent one.
Round. Obtuse angle plus fuller soft tissue through the lower face, so the jaw merges gradually into the neck without a distinct corner. Often confused with "no jawline," but the bone is there — it's the soft-tissue coverage and angle changing what the camera sees.
Asymmetric. Not really a separate type so much as a common overlay: one gonial angle sitting slightly differently from the other. Nearly universal to some degree, usually traceable to chewing side or sleeping position, and almost always invisible to everyone but you.
How to identify yours
Photograph yourself square to the camera at eye level, from about 1.5 metres, neutral expression, in even light. Then take a profile shot the same way.
On the front-facing shot, compare jaw width to cheekbone width — similar means square, noticeably narrower means tapered. On the profile, look at the corner beneath your ear: a visible angle means defined, a smooth curve means soft.
The reason for the setup instructions is that jawline is the single most photo-sensitive facial feature there is. Shooting from above compresses the jaw into the neck and erases definition. Flat frontal lighting removes the shadow that makes the contour visible. Two photos of the same jaw taken badly and well look like two different faces.
What actually changes a jawline
Honest ordering, most to least effective:
- Photography. Camera at eye level, directional light from about 45°, chin pushed slightly forward and down. This changes measured definition more than anything else on this list, immediately, at zero cost.
- Body-fat reduction. Submental fat sits directly over the jaw contour. Reducing overall body fat reveals existing bone structure — the most reliable physical change available, and it is a whole-body process, not a targeted one.
- Posture. Forward head posture shortens the visible jaw-to-neck separation. Correcting it genuinely helps.
- Age and hydration. Sleep, sodium and alcohol all affect facial fluid retention on a day-to-day basis.
- Chewing gum and "jaw exercisers." Masseter hypertrophy can add width at the jaw angle. The effect is real but small, and it thickens the muscle rather than sharpening the bone angle — often not the look people are after.
- Surgery. Genioplasty and jaw angle implants change the underlying geometry. Effective, and a serious medical decision that belongs with a surgeon, not a forum.
What doesn't work: mewing as a claimed adult bone-remodelling technique has no controlled evidence behind it, "jawline exercises" from social media don't reshape bone, and no topical product changes bone geometry.
The part worth keeping in perspective
A sharp jaw photographs well and is heavily selected for in male-model casting specifically. It is one feature among many, and in commercial, beauty and lifestyle work — which is most of the actual paid market — softer lower faces get cast constantly because they read as warm and approachable on camera.
